During my stay in India for yoga teacher training, I began writing poetry again. I wrote poetry quite often from middle school through high school, but I abandoned that creative outlet in college and never revisited it again until my time in India. One day I grabbed my journal to write, and a poem flowed out. The next day, another. And repeat. Here's one I wrote a week into training.

*

she rose

from the pile of ashes that had become

the remains of her prior

life

like a phoenix

a rebirth

she transcends

she is a warrior

a messenger

with rebel intent

to stop the cycle of trauma

spanning a lineage

generations full of self-hatred

sadness

self-sabotage

she fights the fear with

the only weapon

she knows

she exposes her heart

and it shines

a powerful bright white

light

in the darkest of corners

where the fear hides

the fear

comes crawling out

surrenders

dissipates

disintegrates

transmutes

until

there is nothing remaining but the bright white light

this lesson

is one of great importance

she knows now

that

the next time the fear creeps

in

she must not protect her

heart

she must bare

it

she must open

it

and she must allow

that bright white

light

to pour

out

of

her

heart
